Drizzles provide relief from the scorching heat and hot weather. As the seasons change, so do the drinking and eating habits to cope with the current season. Experts recommend changing the pattern and avoiding drinking water from the earthen pot.

The rainy season brings with it relief from the intense heat and exhaustion of summer. During summer, it is a common practice to have clay pots in every home to drink cool water throughout the summer. While chilled cold water is harmful in many ways, drinking water from clay pots is extremely beneficial for the body and mind.

From Ayurveda to naturopathy to yoga, the benefits of drinking water stored in a clay pot have been mentioned. However, if the practice of drinking water from a clay pot is continued during the rainy season, then it is extremely harmful.

Generally, most people continue to drink water from earthen pots even during the rainy season. In such a situation, the question arises that whether drinking water from earthen pots provides relief in summer, is it beneficial or harmful during the rainy season?

Experts say:

If you use a clay pot for drinking water at home, you must have noticed that during the rainy season, the pot reduces the cooling of the water. Also, a white layer of fungus will form and start to accumulate on the pot. If the layer is not removed and the pot is not washed properly, a crust will form and fall into the water.

Now, if the pot is used continuously for several days without properly washing it inside, some pests and fungi may grow inside it. Extra care needs to be taken in cleaning the pot during the rainy season. However, experts have different opinions on whether or not one should drink the water from the pot during the rainy season.

Expert opinion on whether or not to drink water from clay pots during the rainy season

Director of Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga in New Delhi, Dr Kashinath Samgandi, says, “It is not advisable to drink or store water in a clay pot on rainy days. The properties that accumulate in the pot increase the imbalance of vata dosha in the body. That is why it is very harmful to drink water from a clay pot during the rainy season.”

Ayurveda also believes that the chances of bacteria formation increase during the rainy season due to the humidity in the air. These bacteria also grow around the earthen pot. Therefore, it is not correct to drink water from the pot during the rainy season.

What container should be used to drink water?

According to experts, during the rainy season it is completely safe to drink water stored in a copper or steel vessel. Copper purifies water by killing unnecessary bacteria, which is very beneficial for health. Ancient sages also recommend drinking water from a copper vessel.
