Texting can be an indicator of how old you are, according to a TikTok creator.
Tyler Morgan is known for his tech videos showing hidden features on iPhones and Androids. One of his recent videos showed the different methods people use to text, which Morgan said is an indicator of age. “This is how you can tell someone's age by how they type on their phone,” the clip of him began.
According to Morgan, one method is to swipe over the letters instead of tapping them individually, which he says is probably a millennial and “possibly Gen Z” method.
If you can type with one hand, using only your thumb, and do it quickly and accurately, the TikToker assumed this person was between a preteen and 25 years old.
If exactly the same speed and precision can be achieved with two thumbs, Morgan guessed they would have a similar age range as before, from pre-teens to mid-20s and, in this case, “even in their 30s.”
He then claimed that people tend to tap with both thumbs until they reach age 50, which is when they occasionally start texting with their index finger. Then, when people turn 65, Morgan explained, they will start holding their phones with their non-dominant hand and typing completely using only their index finger.
After it was posted, Morgan's video received over two million views, with many people revealing what method they use in the comments section.
“Swiping across text is great because it's not as hard on the thumbs and is helpful in the long run for carpal tunnel, but I usually type with two thumbs (I'm 30) and my hand is too small to type with just one.” hand hahaha”, commented one comment. read.
“One index and I have 50!” Another commenter chimed in.
Other commenters explained that there was no specific method they followed as they used a combination of them depending on how they were feeling that day.
“I do all that and I'm in my early 30s. It just depends on what I'm doing, how I'm holding my phone, and whether or not I want to respond quickly,” one commenter explained.
And some people mentioned that they didn't respect the age rules at all and that the way they wrote was based on the size of their hands.
“I'm an older millennial but I'm also 4'11,” so I type with one thumb because I hold the phone with the other hand. “My hands are too small,” one person wrote in the comments.
Aside from texting, the constant use of iPhones has led to what some people now call “iPhone finger.” In an episode of The TJ Showthat was reposted on TikTok, one person explained the concept of “iPhone finger” and what it looks like.
“The way we sometimes hold our phones with the weight of the phone resting on our pinky finger,” one of the hosts explained in the clip. “It creates an indentation that actually changes the appearance of your pinky.”
To determine if someone has “iPhone finger,” a person should extend both pinkies to see if one looks different from the other, specifically with a large mark on their dominant hand that is likely from holding their iPhone.
