Independence Day 2024: Non-Film Patriotic Songs
- Saare Jahan Se AcchaThe great poet Iqbal described the united Hindustan, which included Bangladesh, Pakistan and present-day India, in his poem “Saare Jahan Se Accha.” Ironically, this poem was first published on August 16, 1904, 43 years after the very day when a newly independent nation came into existence. The song was sung by Lata Mangeshkar and composed by Pandit Ravishankar.
- Vande MataramBankim Chandra composed this song in 1875 and since then it has been translated and reinterpreted in many ways. On the 50th anniversary of India's independence, AR Rahman decided to give the song a beat and updated the song to reflect the current era of India.
- Kadam Kadam Badhaye YesThe Indian National Army, founded by Subhas Chandra Bose, uses this song as its regimental quick march. After World War II, the inspirational song, written by Pt. Vanshidhar Shukla and composed by Ram Singh Thakuri, was banned in India due to seditious allegations. However, in August 1947 the ban was lifted and it is now recognised as a patriotic anthem in India.
- Aye Mere Watan Ke LoginThis song was first sung by Lata Mangeshkar on 27 January 1963 at Ramlila Maidan, in front of Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, two months after the war between India and China ended. The song, which pays tribute to the Indian soldiers who lost their lives in the conflict, was written by Kavi Pradeep and composed by C Ramchandra.
- Mother Tujhe SalaamThis chart-topping patriotic song is taken from the album “Vande Mataram”. Written and sung by Mehboob and AR Rahman respectively, the album was created with the motherland in mind. It came out in 1997 and soon became the highest-selling non-film album in Indian history.
