Hydration to Avoid Intense Workouts: Tips for Staying Safe in the Middle of a Severe Heat Wave

Dehydration is common during the summer season.

You should avoid going outside during the heat as much as possible. Also, if you are going out, carry a bottle of water with you.

The India Meteorological Department recently issued a red alert for some states, including Rajasthan, Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Madhya Pradesh, as a severe heat wave continues in many parts of the country. This week, the temperature in the national capital even crossed 50 degrees Celsius.

As the temperature has increased in recent days, people are facing several problems due to the heat wave. Heat stroke, heat exhaustion, cramps, rashes, and severe dehydration are some of the common illnesses associated with high temperatures. Extreme heat can affect people of all ages, from children to the elderly, and can exacerbate the heat-related problems mentioned above.

That's why it's important to follow some tips and precautions to keep you and your family safe during the heat wave. Follow these tips to stay safe during extreme heat:

Maintain adequate hydration: Dehydration is common during the summer due to the intense heat. Adequate amounts of water and fluids should be consumed to compensate for fluid loss during excessive sweating. Apart from water, you can drink coconut water, lemon water, cucumber juice, buttermilk and many other healthy drinks.

Don't ignore symptoms: Some of the common symptoms of heat-related illnesses include higher than normal body temperature, nausea and vomiting, unusual sweating, dizziness and lightheadedness, muscle cramps, rashes, extreme mood swings, and confusion. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience any of the above symptoms.

Wear breathable clothing: Wearing loose, light-colored clothing during hot weather will help prevent your body from overheating. And during the summer, start wearing cotton clothes. Apply sunscreen every time you go outside, whether it's hot or mild. Use a hat or umbrella to protect your skin and deal with the heat.

Eat well: Regularly including healthy foods in our daily diet will help us stay healthy during the summer. So be sure to include enough seasonal fruits and vegetables in your summer diet.

Avoid going outside: Avoid going outside as much as possible during the heat. Also, if you are going out, carry a bottle of water with you. Avoid unnecessary travel during extreme heat and check weather reports regularly.

Avoid intense workouts: Daily exercise is very important for physical health, regardless of weather conditions. But when the temperature is extreme, vigorous exercise can increase body temperature. Therefore, it would be advisable to perform light, low-intensity exercises to avoid feeling too tired after training.

Pay attention to children: Children are sometimes susceptible to heat-related illnesses. If you have children in your home, you should pay more attention to their nutrition and hydration. Keep them in ventilated places. Even if your child has mild symptoms, see a doctor right away.
