A man has told how he abandoned his holiday after his mother-in-law used his toothpaste – and the internet has been raving about it.

In a recent Reddit post shared on the popular subreddit “Am I the Asshole?”, he explained that he and his wife had been planning a family vacation to Venice for months and wanted to leave their 5-year-old daughter with his mother-in-law, but his mother-in-law wanted to tag along on the trip.

“My wife was very supportive of this idea, but I was more reluctant. My wife planned everything, booked the hotels and restaurants,” he wrote on the platform.

However, his wife booked a hotel room with two queen beds instead of two separate rooms so she could keep an eye on her daughter.

Throughout the trip, his mother-in-law was “constantly in his space” and he needed to borrow all of his wife’s toiletries, which meant going through the couple’s suitcase.

“My daughter likes to sit on our bed when my wife and I go out to town, and when I come back I see that my mother-in-law was also sitting on our bed. To me it is very unhygienic and I don’t like that she was sitting on the bed that my wife and I share, as I am a very private person,” he continued in the Reddit post.

“He also searched through our suitcase for a hair tie, and I was really annoyed that he did that without asking me. I don’t like the idea of him going through our stuff when we’re not there, so I locked it.”

The situation got worse when she realized her mother-in-law had forgotten another item while preparing for the trip. “For the past few days, she has been sharing the same toothpaste as my wife and I. I don’t like the idea of her putting her toothbrush near (or even on) the toothpaste nozzle and it made me sick the more I thought about it,” she wrote.

“I asked MIL if the only reason she came was to take advantage of me and my wife, since she hadn’t paid for any of the expenses (hotel, utilities, food), just her own plane tickets. I told her that I had politely asked her several times to stop using my wife’s things, especially since I share them with her and it’s very inappropriate.”

His mother-in-law told his wife, which led to an argument. The man became so angry about what had happened that he changed his plane ticket to leave early and started ignoring his wife's phone calls.

“My wife called me several times afterward, yelling at me and telling me that our daughter was upset. I feel bad that our daughter was caught in that situation, but it really wasn’t acceptable what my mother-in-law did and I had to set some boundaries before it got worse,” the post reads.

“My wife has her own card and enough money to stay there. I am not sure if she has plans to stay or not. I have been ignoring her calls for me to take time off to take care of my mental health.”

Following the post, many people took to the comments to explain that he was the one who overreacted and was wrong to “ruin” his wife’s ideal vacation.

“Your wife books the wrong hotel room, so your solution is to abandon her on her dream vacation, forcing her to care for your demanding kindergartener alone. Couldn’t you have booked a separate room for your mother-in-law instead of abandoning your wife and child?” one comment read.

Another commenter agreed, writing, “Your complaints are that MIL was using your WIFE’s products *not your products*, sharing toothpaste, and sitting on a hotel bed (which is more than you and your wife have ever used), all while babysitting your kids so you could have a romantic trip. Oh, and MIL had to pay for her own plane tickets to get that privilege. So in the end, you’re talking about a few dollars worth of products, a few cents worth of toothpaste, a few meals, and 1/5 of a hotel room, but she was ‘using’ them.”

“And now you're ignoring your family after skipping the rest of the trip. I didn't expect to be married much longer.”
