How to wear spring's airy floral trend

Sure to be a big hit this summer, flowers floated down the runway at the S/S24 shows with flower power and plush bouquets some of the most talked about pieces: an adventure with femininity was he stuff.

From ethereal dresses to romantic ruffles and sweeping maxi dresses, beautiful flowers took center stage… and we can't wait to burst into this garden party in all its glory.

After all, there's always room for an update to this dreamy favorite…

“Floral dresses are a timeless staple that will never go out of style,” says Esme Stone, brand director at JD Williams. “A flowy, floral but comfortable dress offers the perfect combination of style and femininity.

“Spring is all about pausing, refreshing and enjoying special moments, so whether you're looking for something for a summer wedding or just to wear to the office, flowy florals are a classic.”

Here we explain how to work this romantic look…

1. Floral top

One of the prettiest updates is a floral top, from smock to crop; The key is to make it fun with a plunging neckline or bare midriff.

Especially if you're not sure about head-to-toe floral designs. Jo Collins, head of womenswear, children's and non-textile design at FatFace, recommends choosing a neutral base, such as jeans, and adding a fresh-cut floral top.

Pair them with ballet flats, such as satin or crystal-embellished ones, to create a casual and feminine vibe. They are very up to date: yes, ballet is back.

2. Floral slip

The strappy floral slip signals summer and this staple knows exactly how to look casual…

Whether you wear yours with a white T-shirt underneath or a sweater on top while we wait for the weather to warm up, it's a winner with sneakers or metallic flats.

As Collins says: “Floral dresses are super versatile and can be dressed up or down. For a more casual look, pair your flowy florals with tall T-shirts and a denim jacket, or add your favorite lightweight sweater over the top to create the illusion of a skirt-and-knit combo.

“Coming to another key trend for spring, the maxi skirt.”

3. Floral jumpsuit

Comfortable and elegant, the jumpsuit is another favorite on this occasion, especially with the iconic fashion trends of the seventies still taking center stage.

Paired with heels or wedges, long, flowy, wide-leg pants add length, while making an ideal special occasion staple to accessorize with a floppy sun hat and clutch.

Considered a staple of the modern woman's wardrobe without the hassle of spending time styling separates, this all-in-one does all the hard work for you.

4. Floral case

Delicate, with chiffon ruffles, semi-sheer details and delicate twigs, the floral sheath dress suggests a tea party with all the trimmings.

But this style does not have to be saved for the better. Collins recommends wearing soft layers with a casual jacket or light cable knit.

“The perfect pairing for picnics, summer drinks and everything in between… dedicated to style, embrace the beauty of nature with this key trend.”

5. Floral maxi/midaxi dress

One to watch: will the 'IT dress' steal the show this summer?

“The floral and romantic trend is perfect for the special occasion season, which we are quickly preparing for,” says Rebecca Rhoades, founder of Rebecca Rhoades.

“It's a look that can be modernized by pairing bold prints with very soft fabrics and traditional florals; the trend creates a very feminine look when worn with flattering silhouettes.”

Rhoades suggests opting for color-blocked accessories when wearing prints. “But what I also love about prints is how unique they are to each person: they tell a story.

“So if you want to print on print, do it. Race days and summer weddings are also times to turn heads, so maybe opt for something you wouldn't normally do… but don't outdo the bride!
