If someone's advice does not align with your morals and values, there is a high probability that it is bad.

Many times, there comes a time in a person's life when they are in a dilemma or are not sure how to handle a situation. Like most people, each individual asks others for advice. These tips can be about anything related to a complicated relationship, work, studies, or the next big step in life. As a result, it is important to receive the right advice from the right person.

Sometimes the advice we receive may or may not be correct. If the wrong advice is followed, it can have terrible repercussions or make a difficult decision even more difficult. Although bad advice does not always come from bad intentions, its consequences can even ruin a relationship. So, here are some ways to spot bad advice:

  1. Understand if they are even interested:Sometimes bad advice comes when people are not interested in the conversation. The best way to understand this is to assess whether they are involved in the conversation or not. If someone asks questions related to the situation, this suggests that he is actively participating. However, when someone is not interested, you can give them the advice that works best for them. They do not make an extra effort to understand the situation. They simply suggest what they would have done in that situation.
  2. Check if the person's advice resonates with you: It is extremely important that you check in with yourself before following someone else's advice. If someone's advice brings clarity to your life or feels like the right thing to do, then it's okay to follow their advice. However, if someone's advice does not match your morals and values, there is a high probability that it is bad.
  3. Do they make an effort to understand you?: When it comes to seeking advice, a one-size-fits-all solution doesn't work. Everyone seeks advice tailored to their experiences, situations and circumstances. If someone offers advice that is based solely on their own point of view and makes no effort to understand another person's point of view, then there is a good chance that they are giving bad advice.
  4. Focuses on the result, not the process: Sustainable advice is one that involves a reflective process. If the advice is based solely on results and does not focus on the steps needed to achieve them, then it can be completely unrealistic.
