Krispy Kreme has decided to make Friday the 13th a lucky day.
The doughnut chain announced a deal that will only be offered on Friday, September 13, where customers will be able to purchase a dozen original glazed doughnuts for just 13 cents.
To get the deal, customers must purchase a full-price box of doughnuts or a 16-pack of mini doughnuts and use the promo code “13” when ordering in-store or online through the app or website. There is a limit of one 13-cent box of doughnuts per customer.
The list of participating Krispy Kreme stores can be found on the chain's website.
The store's offering is called “Lucky Friday” amid the superstition that 13 is an unlucky number and Friday the 13th is considered an unlucky date. Over the years, various reasons have emerged as to why this date is considered a bad omen.
Friday the 13th superstitions originate with the Last Supper, which was attended by 13 people – Jesus Christ and his 12 disciples – on Maundy Thursday, the night before his crucifixion at the hands of Roman soldiers on Good Friday.
The number 13 is therefore associated with Judas Iscariot, the betrayer of Christ, and is considered imperfect compared to 12, which represents the number of months in the year. Most years have two Friday the 13th, and sometimes three.
Wendy's has also offered a promotion to celebrate this special occasion. Rewards members can get a free order of any size hot and crispy fries with any in-app purchase.
They can also get a small Frosty for $1 through the end of the month, and the offer can be used multiple times. Customers can choose from the chain's current Frosty flavors: the classic chocolate flavor and the fan-favorite, the Vanilla Frosty, which is officially returning to Wendy's menus nationwide.
Krispy Kreme is also currently offering a collaboration with Barbie in honor of the doll’s 65th anniversary with a limited menu that launched earlier this month on September 3.
There are four donuts in the Barbie-inspired collection: Barbie Pink, Malibu Dream Party, Barbie Berries n' Kreme and Barbie Sweet 65th, which are an ode to the toys.
The Barbie Berries n' Kreme Doughnut features an unglazed doughnut filled with strawberry cream, dipped in white frosting, drizzled with purple and pink buttercream, and topped with a Barbie logo heart.
Barbie Sweet 65th is a glazed donut covered in chocolate frosting and sprinkles using classic Barbie colors, including various shades of pink and a blue reminiscent of the Malibu sky.
The Malibu Dream Party donut is unfrosted and filled with cake batter cream, dipped in Malibu blue frosting and glittery graham sand, and topped with a white marshmallow in addition to the doll's dream house.
And the Pink Barbie is a glazed donut covered in pink frosting, sprinkled with bright pink sugar and topped with a pair of Barbie sunglasses.
