Summer may be drawing to a close, but celebrations are not. With heatwaves forecast well into September, garden parties are on the cards, meaning it's not time to retire your summer wardrobe just yet.

So whether you're attending a family barbecue, hosting a party or going to a relaxed outdoor wedding, here are expert tips and tricks on how to look comfortable and stylish for a summer garden party.

What is the dress code for a garden party?

When you read “garden party” on the invitation, the thought of florals and broderie anglaise often springs to mind. However, sometimes it’s preferable to opt for something more relaxed, especially if large quantities of food are involved. “Garden party etiquette calls for attire that is both stylish and comfortable, capturing the spirit of outdoor gatherings,” says Helen Ashmore, design director at Laura Ashley.

“Opt for light, breathable fabrics in pastel shades or floral prints that reflect the natural beauty of the surroundings. Dresses and skirts are always a safe bet, but tailored trousers paired with an elegant blouse can also be a chic option.”

There’s nothing worse than hearing someone complain about the heat, so make sure you’re wearing something versatile and comfortable. “Wearing cool fabrics like cotton and linen is a good way to avoid this. You can also choose light, neutral colours to avoid darker colours absorbing the heat,” says Adam Laws, luxury fashion expert at Baked Clay London.

What happens if there is a chance of rain?

While heatwave forecasts may fill us with joy, we Brits know we can’t rely on weather apps. “While most people might take a light jacket, I find this can be pointless in hot weather,” says Laws. “A little trick instead is to bring a large sun hat. This will protect you from the rain and make your outfit look summery and stylish.”

If it's raining more than spring and the heat seems to be fading, keep a light cardigan or bolero handy. “A large clip to match your outfit is always a good idea to keep frizz at bay,” recommends style expert and Simply Be ambassador Sophie Hughes.

The best trends for doing sports this summer

One print that has taken over street style for summer 2024 has been polka dots. “There’s never a bad time for a polka dot,” Marc Jacobs reportedly said. From Julia Roberts’ chocolate polka dot dress in Pretty Woman to Marilyn Monroe’s fitted polka dot midi in The Seven Year Itch, the Princess of Wales’s favourite print has been all over the runways and among celebrities all summer long.

If you’re not into cartoon prints, luckily there are less bold trends than polka dots. “When it comes to summer prints, we often opt for florals, which are always a safe bet,” says Laws, “but this year, hand-drawn, illustrated-style prints are trending. Whether it’s hand-embroidered phrases or printed illustrations of beach-related items, choosing any kind of summer-oriented graphic is a great way to show that you’re rocking the latest trend.”

“Long dresses with extravagant prints and wide-leg trousers paired with delicate blouses are particularly on-trend,” says Ashmore. If you’re bored by classic floral prints, “opt for bold prints or larger floral prints to make a bolder statement,” says Hughes.

A must-have for a summer garden party.

When it comes to completing your look, there’s no accessory more essential than sun protection. “A good sunscreen and a statement pair of sunglasses are a must for me,” says Hughes. “Oversized frames are back in force and red is a favourite among the perfect colours. You can also opt for tortoiseshell for a timeless classic.”

Incorporating sun protection into your clothing is essential. “Accessories such as a hat to protect your scalp and sunglasses to protect your eyes are very important to withstand the heat for long periods of time,” says Laws.

“You don’t want to be that person who has to come in every 10 minutes because you didn’t come prepared. Make sure you choose pants and clothing with sleeves that will allow you to stay protected.”
