Gwyneth Paltrow Reveals How Her Father's Cancer Encouraged Her to Dedicate Herself to Wellness


Gwyneth Paltrow has described how she became involved in the wellness industry after her late father, Bruce Paltrow, was diagnosed with cancer.

The 51-year-old actress, who founded her lifestyle brand, Goop, in 2008, took to her Instagram Story on February 29 to talk about her father, who died in 2002 after a long battle with throat cancer. . During the Q&A session, she detailed how she came to wellness when Bruce's cancer battle began.

“It was actually because my dad was diagnosed with cancer when I was about 25 and that started to catalyze my foray into understanding food, environmental toxins, food as medicine and alternative things like acupuncture,” she said.

“So it started a long time ago, I don't know, in the mid-90s thanks to my father,” he concluded.

Since the launch of Goop, Paltrow has often spoken about her wellness routine, which previously sparked some negative reactions. Last year she faced criticism for her “intermittent fasting” routine, which she said included coffee in the mornings, “bone broth” for lunch at 12 p.m., and vegetables or fish for dinner at 6 p.m. At the time, fans and dietitians claimed that the actress was not eating enough sustainable foods throughout the day and was promoting disordered eating habits.

She later addressed the reaction by explaining that she had been eating a lot of “cooked vegetables, all kinds of proteins” and “healthy carbs” to reduce inflammation, which was a post-Covid symptom she was experiencing. Paltrow emphasized that his routine is based on his own “medical results” and “extensive testing” that he has performed “over time,” so it was not a diet he was recommending to others.

“This was a transparent conversation with me and my doctor. It is not intended to be advice to anyone else. It really works for me and has been very powerful and very positive,” she explained, before clarifying that she eats more than “bone broth and vegetables” and has been eating whatever she wants for many days.

Over the years, Paltrow has continued to be open about how her father shaped her career. She revealed to Town Country in 2020 that her father's battle with cancer is what led her to launch Goop.

“His treatment was so brutal that I thought, almost out of desperation, that we had to be able to do something more to help him,” she said.
