One dad thought his money-saving technique was genius, but people aren't convinced.
In a May 5 TikTok video, Josh Mileham showed off his restaurant hack, which he says feeds his family of six easily without racking up the bill. While having dinner with his three sons (Brooklyn, 14, Colton, 11, and Asher, eight) and his six-year-old daughter Vallyn, Mileham announced that he had a “cool trick” to show them.
“It will make you a quesadilla in about two minutes,” the proud father declared, adding that he wouldn't have to spend more than $120.
Mileham took a flour tortilla from a covered container and filled it with cheese. Then he placed it under a hot pan with a platter of fajitas and cooked it like a quesadilla. After a few seconds, Mileham removed the tortilla to reveal the now lightly browned sides and melted cheese.
The innovative adult then handed the quesadilla to his 11-year-old son. Taking a bite, Colton confirmed that the food was delicious with a quick nod of approval.
“Who else hates it when you order food for five kids and no one eats it?” the caption read.
Despite attracting more than 2.5 million views on TikTok, the video didn't garner much support. Conflicted commentators were unsure whether Mileham's stunt was clever or unhealthy and unsatisfactory.
“My children eat like grown men. There is no way that will satisfy my children. “If I can’t afford to feed the kids, I have to stay home,” one parent responded.
Another asked, “How does having them bring you tortillas relieve you from spending 20 bucks because we're a family of 7 so… grievances or at least?”
Other opponents pointed out a possible health problem with Mileham's technique.
“As someone who has worked at Applebees, don't trust those wooden boards to be clean,” said one former restaurant worker.
Another noted: “Oh nooo! Those boards are so dirty! They might clean them a couple of times a week.”
However, there were some who expressed support for Mileham's budget technique.
“I grew up extremely poor and this makes me so happy that you found a way and your kids look so happy to enjoy it,” one viewer commented.
For those who asked how he got extra tortillas from a single order of a fajita plate, Mileham explained that he thought ahead and got an extra side for $2.50.
