On Janmashtami, while people enjoy festive sweets and observe fasting, one must be aware that overindulging can lead to unexpected health problems. Dr Rahul Chaura's advice may be the key to a safe celebration

Most of us observe a day-long fast on Janmashtami, the birth anniversary of Lord Krishna. Many prepare and eat many sweet dishes, including varieties of Paag, throughout the day. It is hard to find a house where Mewa Paag, Giri Paag and Dhaniya Panjiri are not prepared. One can eat nuts endlessly and celebrate the day, if one keeps in mind these five things suggested by this doctor.

Dr Rahul Chaura, an endocrinologist at Yashoda Super Speciality Hospital in Kaushambi, said that after fasting and participating in day-long festivities, people often end up in hospitals with health problems. Therefore, it is better to take precautions beforehand.

1. Choose the right dessert

While the essence of Janmashtami is not complete without sweets, eating them in excess can be harmful. Sweets can not only cause an imbalance in blood sugar levels but can also lead to other health problems. Dr Rahul Chaura says that it is better to eat milk-based sweets during the festival than those made with ghee. This is because sweets made with milk have a lower glycemic index and cause less harm to our body.

2. Avoid fried foods during fasting

Consumption of fried foods like puri, pakwans and fritters after fasting should be avoided at all costs as it increases the risk of obesity and cardiovascular problems. Dr Chaura said fried foods not only increase calories but can also cause dehydration and stomach problems like constipation.

3. Limit the amount of food you eat

In the midst of festivities, we often end up overeating. We even eat one thing or another even during fasting. Sometimes, we eat too much in the evening after going for hours without eating in the morning. This can cause stomach problems. Therefore, it is necessary to monitor the quantity of food that is taken.

4. Maintain a balanced diet

Whether we are fasting or not, we must not forget to include all the nutrients in our diet. We must make sure to include foods like fruits, vegetables, proteins, and milk in our diet.

5. Stay hydrated

We must not forget to drink water as we immerse ourselves in the festivities throughout the day. Drinking enough water keeps our body hydrated and we can enjoy Janmashtami without any problem.
