Elton John's husband David Furnish reveals his rules for marriage

After being married for 31 years, Elton John and his husband David Furnish have rules for their marriage that work for them.

The two were at the Toronto International Film Festival for the premiere of a documentary about the “Rocket Man” singer's life. Elton John: It's never too late, which her husband co-directed with RJ Cutler. There, Furnish talked about how he and John managed to make their marriage last more than three decades.

“Elton and I have never been dishonest with each other,” he said. People at the festival. “We have always talked very openly about our feelings and when we have had challenges and things we need to overcome, we always talk about it.”

The filmmaker added that they both also abide by the “don’t go to bed angry” rule that many couples try to follow.

“We always make sure that before we go to sleep, if there’s any kind of hostility in the air or something that says, ‘I’m not going to talk to you. You really pissed me off,’ we don’t go to sleep thinking about it,” Furnish said. “We don’t carry it over to the next day.”

She noted that in some cases this can last until 3 a.m. if it needs to be “talked through.” “I think it's just about respecting the relationship,” Furnish said.

The couple first met at a dinner party hosted by a mutual friend in 1993, before striking up a connection and going on their first date just a day later.

They entered into a civil partnership in December 2005 and did not legally marry until nine years later, when same-sex marriage became legal in the UK. They have two sons: Zachary, 13, and Elijah, 11.

The “Crocodile Rock” singer recently revealed that he has been slowly recovering from a “serious eye infection” that has affected his vision.

“Over the summer, I have been dealing with a serious eye infection that has unfortunately left me with limited vision in one eye. I am recovering, but it is an extremely slow process and it will be some time before vision returns to the affected eye,” he said in a statement shared on an Instagram post.

“I am so grateful to the excellent team of doctors and nurses and my family who have taken such good care of me over the past few weeks. I have been spending the summer recovering quietly at home and feel positive about the progress I have made in my healing and recovery so far.”

John also reflected on his health in the documentary, explaining how his children are afraid of his death.

“They think about my mortality. They worry about my mortality,” she said in the film. “Not so much for David, but for me.”

He explained that the fear comes from how much his children love him. “So they want him to be here forever, [and] “I would love to be here forever,” John said.

Although he has begun to accept that there may be aspects of his children’s lives that he misses. “I want to see them have kids and get married. I don’t think I’ll be around for that. Who knows?” the “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” singer said. “You never know.”
