'Edington' | Anatomy of a scene

The writer and director Ari Aster tells a sequence of his film with Joaquin Phoenix and Pedro Pascal.

My name is Ari Aster. I am the writer-director of “Eddington”. At the beginning, I just want to say that this is a fundamental scene in the movie, and it is better that you have seen the movie before seeing this, since this is a spoiler. So we are approaching the midpoint of the film here, and now we are following the character of Joaquin Phoenix, the Sheriff Joe Cross, who is the Sheriff of the County of Seville, while investigating a noise complaint about the property of the owner Mayor Ted García, played by Pedro Pascal. Emma Stone on television there. That is Joe's wife. She is denying a recent statement of her husband, who is now being used against him. That is why television is disconnecting. One thing I like about Long Unbroken Toaves is that you can follow the actors and really allow them to live in a space. And I find that Joaquin's body language is really great, especially when you are on your back for so long. As, Joaquin is one of those physical actors where sometimes his back tells you even more than his forehead. And so it is a shot of Steadicam. It is not too crazy, but difficult enough because there is a lot of choreography here. Ted García is Joe Cross's nemesis. “What are you doing?” “Are you not here for rape charges?” “It really didn't work for you, right?” And this is a scene where I am playing a lot with sound. He took a little time in the sound mixture to get this, because you have played music from a source that, according to where the camera is, keep moving. And I like to pass the sound around the room in a theater. The song that sounds at this time is Katy Perry's “Firework”. I just needed that the song really sounds like culture. Many words have been exchanged. Until now in the movie. Many strategic movements made by both characters, and this will be the point of no return. Download noise! II I like how Joaquín's glasses take off. And Joaquin really stands out at times like this. And alone … what you can do with really still. He is a little frozen in a state here, and find what he is really making fascinating.
