Does diabetes cause nerve damage? A doctor explains

This is one of those diseases that is initially not known at all.

When blood sugar gets out of control, it damages the nerves in the body.

Diabetes is a disease in which the pancreas produces little or no insulin or there is resistance to insulin. Since insulin digests sugar and creates energy from it, when there is a lack of insulin, the amount of sugar in the blood increases. It is one of those diseases that, at first, is not known at all.

When the blood sugar level goes out of control, this sugar damages the nerves in the body. This disease is called diabetic neuropathy. In this, nerve damage occurs in all parts of the patient's body. Around 50 percent of diabetic patients have the problem of nerve damage. Therefore, it is very important to control diabetes on time. To avoid such a situation, News 18 spoke to Dr Paras Agarwal of Max Healthcare Gurgaon.

According to the Mayo Clinic, there are four types of diabetic neuropathy, all of which have more or less the same symptoms. The symptoms of diabetic neuropathy appear first in the nerves of the hands and feet. This causes the hands and feet to become numb even sooner. The numbness initially occurs in the hands. Due to high blood sugar levels, the walls of the small blood vessels begin to weaken. Therefore, there is a risk of leaks occurring somewhere. This makes it difficult for oxygen and other nutrients to reach the organs.

Not only that, many other diseases are also prevented.
