Fashion designer Anthony Rubio presents his version of the Met Gala 2024, a canine version of the event called Pet Gala.
On May 20, pedestrians walking down Park Avenue in New York City could see dogs rocking designers on a red carpet outside the AKC Museum of the Dog. The dog fashion event was Rubio's annual fundraising celebration, The Pet Gala, in which she recreates the designs worn at this year's 2024 Met Gala, but for dogs.
“The night of the Met Gala, I was sitting there taking notes and taking pictures,” Rubio said. The Hollywood Reporter. “I don't allow riots because I religiously watch the Met Gala every year. And I study everything about it. As soon as the show is over, I make a list of the different clothes that catch my eye.”
“From there I start to review the garments, the design,” he continued. “How can I interpret that for a dog? Remember, this is something to celebrate dogs. It's also to celebrate the designers who show at the Met Gala. This is not to be mocked. “This is a very serious issue.”
Inspired by the looks worn for this year's Met Gala theme, “The Garden of Time,” Rubio created several of the looks for 18 dogs, including a chihuahua that pays homage to one of John Galliano's outfits from Zendaya, a Pomeranian hugging a dog inspired by Jennifer Lopez. look, and a poodle decked out in a pet couture version of Bad Bunny's Margiela suit.
Some other trendy pups included a Pomeranian dressed in a baby blue suit reminiscent of Ed Sheeran's Stella McCartney's blue suit, as well as a stunning Chorkie in a version of Cardi B's voluminous Windowsen black dress.
The designer designed each of the outfits himself between May 6 and 20 in a remarkably quick process. He revealed that he had stayed up until 4am the night before the Pet Gala, working on the finishing touches on the outfits.
This year's Pet Gala was held for the first time at the Museum of the Dog, raising funds for the museum, which exhibits dog-centric artwork. All guests were invited to a parade and dinner.
The dogs posed alongside models on the outdoor red carpet, with their human counterparts wearing complementary outfits that they would later wear in a runway show held inside the museum. While posing in front of a floral backdrop, models held or walked dogs.
