Colin Jost has discussed whether or not he regrets buying a ferry with Pete Davidson in 2022.
Two years ago, the The New York Times revealed that theSaturday Night Live The stars bought a decommissioned ferry for $280,000 to “restore a piece of New York.” While at the Tommy Hilfiger show during New York Fashion Week, Jost admitted People that for a typically “conservative” spender, the purchase was impulsive.
“It’s absolutely the dumbest, most ill-considered purchase I’ve ever made in my life,” he told the outlet. “The justification I gave was that for the amount of money we were investing in the purchase, if we found the right place to put it, we were basically buying a 65,000-square-foot building.”
He added: “In New York, that’s a very good price per square foot.”
Even though Davidson and Jost have made some renovations to the ferry, it still looks like a Staten Island ferry, mostly because the comedians and their co-investor, comedy club owner Paul Italia, have been busier not only with their full-time jobs but also with other projects. Over time, they hope to completely transform the ferry into the entertainment venue they envisioned from the beginning.
There's also the possibility that the ferry could end up being a functioning ship, with staff to man it and all, but Jost said his team isn't quite there yet. In an ideal world, Jost said he could get the ferry out to sea, but he can't do it alone.
“I’m sure our insurance company would love it,” he joked. “Maybe they would love it because it would get them out of the contract. But it takes a lot of people to move it.”
For now, his team believes it makes the most sense for the ferry to be docked and used as a venue for the Tommy Hilfiger fashion show. Since the ferry's engines are currently out of service, the ferry has to be docked or towed. However, Jost noted that the ferry could be operational “in a matter of weeks” if they wanted it to be.
But with everything that's going on, they're perfectly fine with it being a rather static place for now.
In March, its architect Ron Castellano said Braking The plan was to turn the ferry into a Miami hangout with hotel rooms, restaurants and bars. However, Jost admitted he would prefer the ferry stay in New York City.
“Being on the water in New York is very special,” the comedian said. “Obviously, I would love to be here. I think it’s special if it stays in New York in some way and I think it will be reimagined, but the spirit will be the same.”
