Chappell Roan explained why he yelled at a photographer on the MTV Video Music Awards red carpet.

On Wednesday, September 11, a photographer was heard saying, “Shut the f*** up,” prompting the “Hot to Go!” singer, whose real name is Kayleigh Rose Amstutz, to respond by repeating the phrase while saying, “You shut the f*** up. No, not me, b***h.”

However, when I later spoke to Entertainment Tonight On the carpet, she revealed what triggered her reaction. “This is pretty overwhelming and scary,” she said. “I think for someone who gets very anxious when people yell at them… the carpet is horrible, and I yelled back. You can’t yell at me like that.”

The clip was later posted on X (formerly Twitter) and people left comments claiming that his response was justified.

“People need to understand that she’s nervous,” one comment begins. “It’s her first awards show to be broadcast on television. You don’t know how you’re going to react on the black carpet or what to say if you win, unless you’ve written a speech, of course. People need to leave the poor girl alone and let her enjoy every moment of this evening.”

Another commenter agreed, writing: “As it should be, why is he yelling ‘shut the f*** up’ at a person with a red carpet like that?”

However, other commentators were questioning whether or not Roan should have attended the show if that kind of environment would affect her so much.

“I think all she needs is to stay home, I don’t think she can stand society,” one person wrote in the comments, and another person agreed, writing: “This is nonsense. If you can’t stand it, don’t go. Otherwise, don’t complain about the screaming. The privilege and entitlement that is here is outrageous.”

Since the “Good Luck, Babe!” singer rose to fame after her debut album, The rise and fall of a Midwestern princessShe has been clear in setting several boundaries, especially with her fans.

Earlier this month, she took to TikTok to inform her fans that she had the right to refuse photos with them and that they were not owed them due to her celebrity status.

“I don’t care that abuse, harassment, stalking, whatever, is a normal thing that is done to people who are famous or a little bit famous,” she said in a video.

“I don't care that it's normal. I don't care that this kind of crazy behavior comes with the job, [or] “The professional field I have chosen does not mean that it is right, that it is normal, that I want it, that I like it.”

The “Pink Pony Club” singer continued, “I don’t want whatever it is that you think you’re supposed to get every time you see a celebrity. I don’t give a shit if you think it’s selfish of me to say no to a picture or your time or a hug.”

“That’s not normal. It’s weird. It’s weird how people think you know a person just because you see them online and hear the art they make. That’s fucking weird. I can say no to creepy behavior,” the video ends.

Roan captioned the video: “Please don’t assume this is directed at anyone or a specific encounter. This is just my side of the story and my feelings.”
