After parades of boats led by the Paris 2024 Olympic teams, casts of faceless torchbearers and headless Marie Antoinette replicas, Céline Dion officially closed this year's opening ceremony in Paris with an emotional performance.
Although the 56-year-old Canadian singer was rumoured to be performing during the opening celebrations, her attendance was not confirmed until she took to the stage halfway up the Eiffel Tower in the grand finale, in full glamour.
Her voice, delicate yet powerful, echoed throughout the city as her long-sleeved fringed dress shimmered and reflected in the bright lights. Several layers of beads decorated the dress and the threads swayed with the slightest movement.
She really made the night shine in her sparkling high-neck dress, prompting praise from her fans online.
“That's glorious,” wrote one fascinated fan on X, formerly known as Twitter, while another enamoured viewer said: “Celine Dion is glorious! Paris was blessed with a fantastic performance!”
A third added: “She was the best and still is, her performance proves it.”
The renowned vocalist was recently diagnosed with stiff-person syndrome, a rare autoimmune neurological disorder. According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, stiff-person syndrome can cause “muscle rigidity” and “painful spasms.”
Since her diagnosis, the famous singer has not been able to perform as before. However, under the stars of the City of Light, with her ballad for the opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, she touched the hearts of her fans as she always has.
