A chocolate bar with a cult following (discontinued last year to much disappointment) is back in stores for a limited time, its creators have announced.

Caramac, the caramel-flavored candy, is back on sale from Tuesday in the form of a classic single bar, a multipack of three bars and a bag of buttons to share, Nestlé said.

They will remain available at retailers nationwide while supplies last.

Nestlé confirmed in November that it would stop making the sweet after 64 years due to falling sales.

However, the company said it decided to create an opportunity for fans to enjoy it again for a limited period.

Lisa Butterworth, Brand Manager for Nestlé UK and Ireland, said: “Calls for the return of Caramac have been heard loud and clear, and for this unique bar we wanted to create a special opportunity for fans to enjoy it once again.

“We hope this limited release will give people the opportunity to sample and stock up on Caramac as a gesture of our appreciation for the long-standing support of our confectionery fans over the years.”

Announcing its discontinuation last year, Nestlé said: “We are very sorry to disappoint Caramac fans. There has been a steady decline in sales over the past few years and we have regrettably had to take the difficult decision to discontinue it.

“We know fans will be disappointed to see it go, but this change will allow us to focus on our best-performing brands as well as develop exciting new innovations to delight consumers’ palates.”

The bar was produced in Norwich until 1996, when it moved to Nestlé's factory in Fawdon, near Newcastle upon Tyne.

It is not a chocolate bar because it does not contain cocoa.

Swiss-based Nestlé confirmed in 2022 that it planned to close the Fawdon plant and move production overseas.

The decision sparked a flurry of posts on social media, with one fan posting on X, formerly Twitter: “What! Please. God. No! Nestle please tell me you're not going to give up #caramac, it's the only 'chocolate' I eat! Don't let it disappear! I love it!”

Others wrote: “This is a national scandal, how can they get rid of Caramac?” and “I know there is a lot of talk about Brits not getting angry about anything, but the anger directed at @NestleUKI for getting rid of #Caramac shows there is still fight in the old dog.”
