Broadway shows to see this winter and spring

To protect yourself from the heartbreak of counterfeit tickets, your safest bet is to purchase them through the show's website or at the box office. The ticket office in particular has its advantages, including not having to pay high service fees. And if you have a discount code, like those sometimes offered at Theatremania.com or Broadwaybox.com, it should work in person too. But check the box office hours before you leave.

The TodayTix app is a trusted source of often discounted Broadway tickets that users purchase online. For some shows, you can choose your exact seats; For others, you choose the general section where you want to sit and TodayTix assigns your seats. It depends on the show whether you receive barcoded e-tickets on your device or physical tickets you pick up at the theater box office. The app can also be used to participate in some programs' digital lotteries, which offer the chance to buy cheap tickets if you win, or to find rush digital tickets for the same day.

TKTS, Times Square's discount ticket mainstay, is selling same-day matinee and evening tickets, as well as tickets for the next day's matinee, at up to 50 percent off. The Lincoln Center satellite booth is also open again. In the TKTS app, or online, you can see in real time which shows are on sale, at what location, and how much tickets cost. But that doesn't mean that when you get to the window there are seats left for the show you want and you have to buy them in person. (For some Off-Broadway shows, sales are cash only.) Options are most plentiful right after the booths open, but new tickets are released throughout the day, even as curtain time approaches, so going later can also be lucky.

Many shows, although not the biggest hits, offer same-day tickets, either at the box office or online. for much less than the full price. some too sell standing room tickets if a show is sold out. Don't count on getting lucky with these, because availability varies, but they're worth a try. Conveniently, Playbill maintains an up-to-date online tab of individual program policies on digital lotteries, rush tickets (sometimes for students only, often for everyone), standing room, and other discounts.

Don't bet on them. In the early stages of its reopening, Broadway was eager to reassure ticket buyers with flexible policies on changes and cancellations. That is no longer the case. Buyer beware.

Is it cascading from the heavens? That may be your chance to snag some suddenly available seats at the box office, though be prepared to pay face value. Your chances of winning a lottery ticket are also better on days like that.
