Brittney Griner and her wife Cherelle welcomed their first child.

In a July 19 interview with CBS SportsThe 33-year-old basketball player revealed that she and her wife Cherelle, 32, welcomed a baby boy on July 8. While beaming from ear to ear, Griner added that they would call her “pops.”

“That’s my man. He’s amazing,” Brittney said, adding that her son weighed 7 pounds. “They said that as soon as you saw them, everything you thought mattered would go out the window. That’s literally what happened.”

When asked about having to leave her newborn baby to compete during the WNBA All-Star Weekend in Phoenix, and then at the 2024 Paris Olympics to represent Team USA for a third time, Brittney admitted to feeling mixed emotions.

“It’s a little annoying because I have to go, but at the same time, he’ll understand,” Brittney said, adding that she’ll have plenty of pictures of him to look at while in Paris. “Now my whole phone has become him.”

In April, the couple announced the pregnancy on social media. They wrote in the caption: “I can’t believe we are less than three months away from meeting our favorite human.”

The WNBA star and the lawyer met as students at Baylor University in Texas, which they attended from 2009 to 2013.

Although the two didn’t start dating until two years later, Brittney recalls that it was love at first sight. “You had no idea, but I knew you were the one for me, babe. You stuck by me through the lowest of times and the highest of times!”

The couple have been through a difficult few years after Griner was detained in Russia for 10 months on drug charges in 2022. She was eventually released in a prisoner swap for international arms dealer Viktor Bout on December 8, 2022.
