Instant ramen may be a favorite meal for college students, but one couple decided to serve the dish at their wedding.
In a Reddit post shared on the popular “Wedding Shaming” subreddit, a wedding guest revealed that he had recently been invited to the wedding of his partner’s childhood best friend. The invitation for the event specified that the attire was “formal.”
Elsewhere on the invitation, guests were asked if they wanted chicken or fish as their main dish, however, when they arrived they were met only with an instant ramen bar, the Reddit user said. “On the day of the meal, we were met with a self-serve instant ramen bar. Just instant ramen, cubed ham, some small veggies here and there, and bags of kid-sized chips. To top it off, it was also BYOB,” the Reddit post reads.
The couple decided not to think too much about the change of plans, considering there was a chance money would be tight. However, that didn't seem to be the case, as the Reddit user noted that both the bride and groom are “well into their careers (the bride-to-be is a professional chef, isn't that ironic?), own their own home, and are going to Cuba for their honeymoon.”
“My partner and I hadn’t eaten dinner because we thought we would be fed. We spent the party hungry and had to buy fast food right after to satisfy ourselves. I’ve been to a lot of weddings. I’m not a snob, far from it. But that wedding is the most vulgar one I’ve ever been to,” the post concluded.
After posting, many people took to the comments section to provide a possible explanation for the change in eating plans.
“Is there a chance something went wrong with the catering and they had to scramble to find something to feed their guests?” one commenter asked.
“I think so! But no, it turns out they hosted a meal for a different group of people but misled the other guests. The guests were not informed or apologized for,” the Reddit user responded.
“Were you allowed to be at the wedding venue or were you directed to a remote video site as well?” another person joked in the comments.
One commenter even mentioned what they would have done to retaliate in some way for not receiving ramen.
“It’s tasteless, no doubt, but I would have eaten it anyway. In fact, I would have eaten A LOT of it. Or I would have filled my plate with all the ham and vegetables. Just because they tasteless doesn’t mean you have to starve yourself,” they wrote.
Other commentators talked about their own experiences of being served poor quality food at a wedding.
“I once went to one in a small town. My fiancé was a member of the wedding party, so we were running around all day and had nothing to eat, but we decided to eat at the reception. In the end, the ‘dinner’ consisted of very meager salad plates and that was it. I was really hungry, and then they opened the bar. I should mention that there was nowhere in the town to get food at night or I would have gone there to get a sandwich.”
