A trio of U.S. women's soccer players have revealed a new nickname for themselves at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
In an interview in the Today is the showForwards Trinity Rodman, 22, Mallory Swanson, 26, and Sophia Smith, 23, revealed to hosts Savannah Guthrie and Hoda Kotb that they had created a nickname for their trio. Smith introduced the nickname by saying, “We have a name for ourselves, too. We have an announcement. Trinity, take it.”
“We have a proposal to name our trio ‘Triple Espresso,’” Rodman proudly explained, referencing the trio that joined forces to score nine of Team USA’s 10 goals on their way to the Olympic final. “So we’re going to leave that up in the air and let people use it because we like it, too.”
On Saturday, when they faced Brazil, the star players showed their unmistakable heroics: Smith scored the game-winning goal in overtime off an assist from Swanson, allowing them to beat Germany 1-0 in the semifinals. Meanwhile, in an earlier round, Rodman came to the rescue of the U.S. team by scoring in overtime, giving the team a 1-0 victory over Japan that allowed them to advance to the semifinals.
One day after the U.S.-Brazil game — the first time the team has competed for an Olympic gold medal since 2012 — Smith will celebrate her 24th birthday on Aug. 11. For her birthday, Smith hopes the team will take gold.
“There’s only one thing I want for my birthday,” Smith said. “For it to be the best birthday ever and for us to have the best birthday party afterward.”
The trio were brought in by new head coach Emma Hayes to inject some fresh energy into the highly successful veteran team and quickly established themselves as star players in their own right and out of the shadows of breakout stars Megan Rapinoe, Carli Lloyd and Alex Morgan.
But the trio of twenty-somethings aren't exactly new to the game, with Swanson making her Olympic debut at just 17 years old at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Meanwhile, Smith and Rodman are a different story. The pair first took their on-court skills to the international level when they played for the United States women's national soccer team (USWNT) at last year's FIFA World Cup.
