A woman found herself in conflict with her father-in-law after throwing away some homemade cookies that she didn't want her children to eat.

In a recent Reddit post shared on the popular subreddit “Am I a Moron?”, the father-in-law explained that he is an avid baker despite his daughter-in-law being very health-conscious.

“My daughter-in-law (Emily) cares a lot about her health and even more so now that she has two children,” the Reddit post explained.

“This is the type of person who avoids sugars, eats mostly organic foods and avoids processed foods.”

The Reddit user then revealed that they tend to bake sweet treats when their grandchildren are around, though this usually ends in an argument with Emily about feeding her children unhealthy foods.

“A few months ago we had an argument about this because we weren’t giving the kids junk food. I pointed out that everything was homemade and I wasn’t just serving them cookies. My son chimed in and we came to an agreement that the kids could have a cookie when they were here,” the post continues.

The new plan had been working until the grandkids stayed over and the grandparents decided to bake a batch of cookies. Before Emily and her husband left, they also slept over for a while. While the cookies were cooling after being taken out of the oven, Emily decided to throw the entire tray in the trash.

“When I asked him why he did it, he told me he was doing me a favor because they weren’t healthy,” the father-in-law recalled.

“I yelled at her and told her she had no right to throw away the food I had worked so hard to prepare. She got defensive and said she was just trying to help. My son stepped in and told me to calm down, but I was furious. Emily left the room crying, and now my son says I overreacted and should apologize.”

The Reddit post ended with the father-in-law mentioning that they told their son that they would no longer babysit his grandchildren until the matter was resolved and noting that they refused to apologize to their daughter-in-law for the incident.

Following the post, many people took to the comments section to defend the mother-in-law's actions, explaining that Emily broke the rules of an engagement they had originally agreed to.

“In this case, you couldn’t serve the kids cookies, even though you were doing them a favor by babysitting them. But everyone agreed that each of the kids could have a cookie. And your daughter-in-law not only decided that her kids couldn’t have cookies, she threw out cookies for YOU, which you made with your own ingredients,” one comment began.

“You need to be clear with your son: you all agreed to this compromise and it was incredibly rude of your daughter-in-law to throw away your own food in your own home, and there is NO excuse for that. Would it be okay for you to go into her home, open the cupboards and throw away whatever you wanted? No, of course not. If your daughter-in-law had decided she didn’t want her kids eating cookies, she could have said so, but instead she destroyed YOUR property.”

Another commenter agreed, writing: “You have already come to a reasonable agreement about what the children eat in your home. If the daughter-in-law apologizes for throwing away your food, it is only fair that you apologize for raising your voice and/or using unkind words, but she disrespected you in your own home; it is absurd for her to think that you would appreciate it.”
