A clothing horoscope for the perfectionist Virgo

(Beth Hoeckel/For The Times)

Not everyone can want Meet a Virgo, but everyone will. need At some point or another, you will. No matter how much you resist their tutelage, or how stubbornly you may ridicule the sixth sign for the persistent demon of perfectionism that seems to curse their every move with a certain shade of misery, there will eventually come a time when you wish they were there. Will it be the time when you get a flat tire on the 101 in 90-degree heat in the middle of rush hour and your Virgo passenger swaps it out for the spare with his bare hands and makes you an appointment with your mechanic in less than 20 minutes? Or the time when you’re whining about a breakup and your Virgo friend calmly and rationally reminds you that your ex’s finances were not in a state of IRS compliance worthy of a long-term partnership—and, by the way, it was outrageously obvious that he never flossed his teeth? And then there's that hallowed, holy grail of LA friendship duties: helping you move, and guess who'll show up five minutes early with Gjusta baked goods for everyone?

In an age and culture where one's word is only as airtight as their integrity allows, the presence of a Virgo can be a blessed respite from the murkiness. It's the attention to detail, of course, the practicality, the methodical way they diligently approach the most dreaded task without any melodrama and with all reasonableness, so they can move on to more important tasks, why else?

Every sign has its needs, and for Virgo, that need is to be useful, to allow the many acts of service to be enough (a Virgo is never enough for itself). Its commitment to the illusion of unattainable perfection is not only what drives it to succeed, but what actually enables it to do so, which, in the process, shrouds it in pessimism, incomprehension, or both. A Virgo is, in this sense, just as sensitive as its sister sign, Pisces.

Every sign has its needs, and for Virgo, that need is to be useful, to allow the many acts of service to be enough (a Virgo is never self-sufficient).

And so we come to Ferm Living’s brown pebble mill, a sturdy yet delicate talisman of Virgo’s fragile vigor. A soft, flowing silhouette in ash wood represents the intentional, sculptural quality of our Virgo constellation. The pebble mill, like many Virgos, is a tool, designed to diligently crumble salt and pepper to add the final, functional touch to a work of culinary art. For Virgos, it may not be the flavor, but it is the instrument that facilitates the flavor, which might make them just as important (if not more so) than the flavor itself. There is no sensual enjoyment, no time to watch birds play in the clouds, no meaningful glances exchanged between lovers, without tasks being completed and arrangements made to get to that point in the first place. Virgos help us with life, so we can do the things that make us feel alive. Shouldn’t we love them for that?
