The Buss family agreed to sell a majority participation of Los Angeles Lakers to businessman Mark Walter in an agreement that values the team at $ 10 billion, according to people with knowledge of the terms.
The sale would mark a new record of NBA valuations. The Crypto.com sand, where the Lakers play, is owned by AEG and is not included in the agreement.
The official valuations of the official NBA team of CNBC classified the Lakers as third parties in the League in terms of value, at $ 7 billion.
“Mark Walter is holding an agreement to acquire additional interests in Los Angeles Lakers of the NBA, which has been interested since 2021,” said a Walter representative in a statement to CNBC.
The Lakers did not respond immediately to a comment request.
As part of the agreement, Jeanie Buss will retain a minority participation in the team she has had since her family bought the franchise in 1979 for $ 67.5 million. She will also keep her governor's seat.
Walter is CEO and co -founder of Guggenheim Partners and is not new in sports property. He is also the majority owner of Los Angeles Dodgers of MLB, WNBA's Sparks and the next Formula 1 team in Cadillac. It also has the Professional League of Women's Hockey.
The former legend of the Lakers, Earvin “Magic”, Johnson, who is also Walter's Commercial Partner, praised the transaction in an X publication.
“Well done my sister Jeanie Buss for getting an incredible treatment and choosing the right person to continue with the legacy of the Lakers and the tradition of winning,” Johnson told. “Mark Walter is the best option and will be the best caregiver of the Laker brand.”
The NBA assessments have shot since the League completed its rights agreement of the most recent media, valued at $ 77 billion in 11 years.
In March, the Boston Celtics were sold for a record of $ 6.1 billion to the private capital executive Bill Chisholm.
Celtics and Lakers are possibly two of the most marquesine franchises in the NBA.
In February, the Lakers acquired the superstar of the Dallas Mavericks, Luka Doncic, to associate with LeBron James.
The Lakers ended the 2025 season as seed number 3 at the West Conference with a 50-32 record.
