The memorandum was sent to the staff on Friday and seen by CNBC. It was written by Kiera Fernández, head of community impact and equity capital for Target.
“Many years of data, ideas, listening and learning have been shaping this next chapter in our strategy,” he said in the Memo. “And as a retailer who serves millions of consumers every day, we understand the importance of staying in tune with the external panorama in evolution, now and in the future, all in service to boost Target's growth and win together.”
With the move, the minneapolis -based discount joins a growing list of companies that include TRACTOR SUPPLYFacebook father Goal, Walmart and McDonald's that have eliminated the promises and objectives related to DEI. Some of these companies faced pressure from conservative activists or cited the affirmative blocking action of the Supreme Court in universities, which may not force corporations to take any measure on the subject.
The company's decision also follows the executive orders of President Donald Trump, carried out almost immediately after its inauguration, to end the Government's Dei programs and put federal officials supervising those licensed initiatives.
The diversity commitments of many corporations, including those of Target, go back for years and strengthened as a result of the protests of “Black Lives Matter” and the murder of George Floyd in 2020.
Four years ago, the CEO of Target, Brian Cornell, said that the murder, which occurred a short distance from Target's headquarters in his hometown, felt staff. He said it motivated him to intensify the efforts of diversity and capital of Target.
“That could have been one of the members of my target team,” he said at that time, telling his thoughts while watching Floyd's video breathing finals.
