U.Today – The blockchain is headed for a massive rebrand as its long-awaited Dencun upgrade is now live on the Sepolia testnet. The Ethereum Foundation projected that the Dencun update would launch on Sepolia on January 30, and lead developer Terrence.eth revealed the successful integration, for which it received a lot of praise from the community.

The Dencun upgrade that will be available on Sepolia is one of the two remaining steps required to launch the upgrade on the Ethereum mainnet. Ethereum has long been plagued by lower scalability and high gas fees. Because of this, it has continued to receive intense reactions from industry analysts such as legendary trader Peter Brandt, who believes its high operating cost is the basis for its long-term demise.

The Dencun upgrade will attempt to solve scalability issues while also making Ethereum more profitable as a protocol. The Dencun update will specifically introduce proto-danksharding, a compressed data storage mechanism called “blobs” to help optimize performance.

Development efforts are now in advanced stages, as the update was released on the Goerli testnet earlier this month. The last step before the mainnet debut will be the launch on the Holesky testnet, an update scheduled for February 7.

Ethereum to fight its competitors

Many new protocols have emerged to take advantage of the weakness of the Ethereum protocol. From (SOL) to (ADA) and even (AVAX), the race to dethrone Ethereum remains the central mantra for many developers in the Web3 ecosystem today.

With the Dencun upgrade, many of Ethereum's weaknesses can be resolved, making the protocol more attractive to developers and end users in general. With the upgrade, Ethereum is set to expand its dominance as the leading blockchain of choice for all things decentralized finance (DeFi) and more.
