Driving performance, growth and innovation in life sciences automation

ATS Automation is a Business Reporter client.

Chances are you or someone in your home has felt the impact of what we do at ATS Life Sciences.

Think about your morning routine: brushing your teeth, shaving, putting in contact lenses, taking your medications (which you may have ordered online), checking your blood glucose, self-administering an injection or inhaler dose. Or consider a clinical setting where you provide a sample for a diagnostic test (even for your pet): all the tubes, medical tools, syringes, vials, IV bags, and other things you see, plus the lab equipment you don't use. I don't see it, they were produced by a life sciences manufacturer.

When a life sciences original equipment manufacturer (OEM) wants to bring its pharmaceutical product, medical device, or diagnostics to market, it works with life sciences manufacturers. Typically, the OEM will have to act as an integrator and contract qualified and highly regulated services from four or five different companies; acting as its own general contractor. In a complex project there can be a lot of finger-pointing between suppliers, and that's not what a client wants when he's trying to bring a product to market.

Delivery is key in this market. Often our ATS clients come to us after receiving regulatory approval and need to get their product to market quickly. The only thing they don't want to compromise on is quality.

When a client approaches ATS they want to know that we can deliver. And they choose us for our reputation for unmatched automation and scalability, which we've enhanced with end-to-end manufacturing capabilities. Add to this a true customer-centric approach based on collaborative innovation and the global impact and growth that ATS can signal, and we have a winning formula.

As part of our procurement strategy, ATS has brought together a group of skilled suppliers under one banner to offer a one-stop shop for the customer. We are vertically integrated, provide a single project manager and have a single point of responsibility. When time to market is key for customers, that internal integration of complex processes adds great value.

Our vision is to double the Life Sciences Group organically in the next four years and we are confident in our ability to achieve this. Our strategy is to strengthen our core and expand into adjacent markets, expanding our portfolio of products that support our customers throughout the drug development lifecycle, from basic research and development to commercial production.

While our focus is the life sciences and our engineers develop wonderful machinery, we are also entrepreneurs and consider comprehensive problem solving as a skill we also bring to the table. We recognize and address relocation issues, labor and skills shortages, supply chain management and capital expenditure issues with greater efficiency and reduced total cost of ownership, while still operating more sustainably with less use of energy and emissions.

Digitalization and AI/machine learning can be an additional burden on the skilled labor shortage, or can be addressed as something that adds real value. Modern software tools are information intensive, and the obstacles that enable them are now found in all machine architectures. Our thought processes around data accessibility and availability must change with a focus on how to scale and make all team data available on-demand without additional programming.

Ats: Driving performance, growth and innovation with Ats Life Sciences Automation 1

Innovation can strike fear into the hearts of some people, especially in highly regulated industries, because change introduces risks. That valid concern must be weighed against the potential advantages of building a better mousetrap. ATS has three dedicated Innovation Centers (in Canada and Germany) where we throw out the rules and allow creative minds to explore possibilities. With multiple patents pending, this is an investment that continues to pay dividends and is a point of differentiation we point out with pride.

Working with a global leader in life sciences automation has its benefits, and partnering end-to-end to achieve a shared goal is just one of them. Everyone who works here helps deliver solutions that positively impact billions of people around the world.

Think of us the next time you brush your teeth, wear contact lenses, or talk to a family member in cancer remission. Our equipment is used to manufacture pharmaceuticals, medical devices and diagnostics, but our drive for innovation, our global presence and our work with the world's leading life sciences companies, our customer-centric business processes and our passion for delivering products of high quality on time are what change is being experienced around the world.

Our constant drive to grow in adjacent markets through organic means and acquisitions keeps us as leaders in our spaces.
