Delta airlinesThe chief operating officer will leave the company at the end of the month, the company announced in a securities filing on Friday.

Chief Executive Ed Bastian said in a memo to employees that Chief Operating Officer Mike Spanos will take a job at another company.

His departure, after just over a year in office, comes weeks after Delta suffered a collapse following the massive Mass coup outage in July. Delta estimates those outages cost the airline about $500 million and said it will seek compensation from CrowdStrike and Microsoft.

However, Bastian said in Friday's memo that Spanos told him earlier this summer that he was “considering opportunities outside of Delta.”

Delta has no plans to replace Spanos, Bastian said. Instead, John Laughter, chief operating officer and president of Delta's TechOps maintenance and overhaul unit, and Allison Ausband, director of customer experience, will report to Bastian.

Spanos joined Delta in May 2023 and previously served as CEO at Six flags Executive and entertainment positions in PepsiCo.
