- Rollup-as-a-Service platform Caldera is launching Guardian Nodes, a production-ready node system that allows network users to verify rollup blocks for rewards.
- HYCHAIN, the first team to leverage this system with Caldera, generated $8 million from the initial sale of nodes.
Caldera, the leading Rollup-as-a-Service (RaaS) platform, currently powers over fifty EVM rollups (including Manta, Injective inEVM, Kinto, HYCHAIN, Treasure, and ApeChain) securing approximately $1 billion in total value locked.
Along with its accumulated core infrastructure, Caldera offers a catalog of more than 50 integrations across the modular stack and a variety of other custom front-end tools for chains to leverage.
Guardian Nodes are the latest addition to that list.
The bottom
Today, most L1 blockchains operate using a proof-of-stake model, where participants in a chain are incentivized through network rewards to lend their stake and validate the chain.
This incentive structure encourages decentralization by encouraging individual participants to operate honest validators, while punishing those who do not, resulting in an extremely high cost to attack a network and compromise its security.
Decentralize rollups
EVM rollups have virtually solved the scalability problem, with L2 and L3 allowing for virtually infinite scaling. But there is still no incentive for honest network participants to monitor these summaries.
Caldera's Guardian Nodes allow teams to decentralize their accumulations by allowing users to verify blocks and secure the network in exchange for rewards. At its core, this is achieved by introducing a novel “lightweight verifier” into Arbitrum rollups that allows Guardian Node operators to verify batches of Nitro on everyday hardware without needing to run a full node.
Teams can release Guardian Nodes to their users through a “Node Sale”, which distributes “keys” that authenticate a node's eligibility to submit claims and earn rewards, granting buyers the ability to operate a Guardian Node in a given cumulative package.
HYCHAIN, the first team to leverage this system, raised over $8 million in over 16,000 node keys in just 2 weeks, completely empowering their community and generating significant revenue for their project.
By allowing more parties to monitor a summary and identify malicious behavior, network security becomes stronger, a crucial step in establishing trust in the correctness of the chain. This, in turn, drives increased demand for a rollup's native token, which is necessary for users to participate in validation and helps provide practical cryptoeconomic security for the network.
The Guardians Nodes are another notch in the belt of Caldera's impressive infrastructure solution. With the successful launch of HYCHAIN, we expect more teams to create rollups to take advantage of this innovative product in the coming months.
