Aldi's Christmas sales rise to £1.65bn

Supermarket Aldi has revealed sales of £1.65 billion over the Christmas month as price remained the “top priority” for shoppers.

The group reported a 3% increase in sales in the four weeks leading up to Christmas Eve as it recorded a record 57 million transactions.

The German-owned discounter, Britain's fourth-largest supermarket chain, said sales rose more than 5% in the final trading week before Christmas, with around £500 million coming into its tills.

The previous month's performance marks a slight slowdown from the previous Christmas, when sales rose 3.4%.

Last week, close rival Lidl reported a 10% rise in Christmas sales, as it turned over more than £1.1bn in the four weeks to December 24.

Aldi said price was “the biggest priority for shoppers in 2025, and customers will be looking for ways to celebrate on a budget”.

Despite this, customers opted for its premium own-brand range, Specially Selected, sales of which increased by more than 12%.

Giles Hurley, CEO of Aldi UK and Ireland, said: “This Christmas proved once again that a high-quality Christmas can still be affordable.

“We are grateful that more people than ever have chosen Aldi for their Christmas shop and have trusted us to deliver quality and value during what remains a difficult time for many.”
